Programme of nursing interventions to a relative in the emergency department to reduce anxiety and improve satisfaction: experimental study

Resumen

El servicio de urgencias es una de las unidades más especializadas de un hospital. El ingreso de un familiar en un servicio de urgencias produce elevados niveles de ansiedad en las familias debido a varios factores. Los familiares tienen unas necesidades que es importante satisfacer para reducir dicha ansiedad. El objetivo de este estudio es disminuir la ansiedad y mejorar la satisfacción de los familiares en urgencias. Metodología: Se plantea un estudio experimental con dos grupos: el grupo control y el grupo experimental, que recibirá el Programa Intervenciones Enfermeras a Familias en Urgencias. El ámbito de estudio será el servicio de urgencias del Hospital Clínic i Provincial de Barcelona durante el periodo comprendido entre septiembre del 2019 hasta septiembre del 2021 y se contará con los familiares que cumplan los criterios de inclusión (familiares de pacientes con nivel de triaje 2 y 3, mayores de 16 años, participación voluntaria). Se recogerán variables sociodemográficas. Para valorar el grado de ansiedad y la satisfacción del familiar se utilizarán la escala de Ansiedad- estado (STAI) y el cuestionario sobre necesidades familiares, respectivamente. El método de selección de la muestra será probabilístico, aleatorizado y sistemático. Para medir el tamaño del efecto de la intervención sobre la ansiedad del familiar se empleará la d de Cohen y el porcentaje de cambio entre las puntuaciones de pretest-postest en ambos grupos. Para comparar el efecto de la intervención sobre el nivel de satisfacción del familiar se compararán la frecuencia de respuestas de cada ítem entre los dos grupos con la prueba de Chi cuadrado. 

Abstract

The emergency department is one of the most specialised units in a hospital. The admission of a relative to an emergency department produces high levels of anxiety in families due to several factors. Family members have needs that are important to satisfy in order to reduce said anxiety. The aim of this study is to reduce anxiety and improve the satisfaction of family members in the emergency department. Methodology: An experimental study is planned with two groups: the control group and the experimental group, which will receive the Nursing Interventions to Families in Emergency Program. The study area will be the emergency department of the Hospital Clínic i Provincial de Barcelona during the period of time between September 2019 to September 2021 and will include relatives who meet the inclusion criteria (relatives of patients with triage level 2 and 3, over 16 years of age who wish to participate voluntarily). Sociodemographic variables will be collected. The Anxiety-State scale (STAI) and the Family Needs Questionnaire, respectively, will be used to assess the degree of anxiety and the satisfaction of the family member. The method of selection of the sample will be probabilistic, randomised and systematic. To measure the size of the effect of the intervention on the anxiety of the relative, the Cohen d and the percentage change between the pretest-postest scores in both groups will be used. In order to compare the effect of the intervention on the level of satisfaction of the relative, the frequency of responses of each item between the two groups will be compared with the Chi square test.
